Joint Chiefs of Staff

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the principal military adviser to the President, Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council. By law, the Vice Chairman is the second ranking member of the Armed Forces and replaces the Chairman in his absence or disability.

GPS Roles and Responsibilities

  • Validates requirements for GPS modernization through the Joint Requirements Oversight Council (JROC).
  • Applies GPS technology to a broad variety of military operations, including precision guided munition strike, force tracking, search and rescue, and remote piloting of unmanned aerial vehicles.
