Defense Appropriations
The Department of Defense received its FY 2009 appropriations through the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, FY 2009.
The measure funded GPS at $136 million for procurement and $819 million for development.
Section 8071 provides that, "Funds available to the Department of Defense for the Global Positioning System during the current fiscal year may be used to fund civil requirements associated with the satellite and ground control segments of such system's modernization program." View law (PDF)
Civilian Appropriations
The Department of Transportation received its FY 2009 appropriations through the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009. The joint explanatory statement to accompany the measure provided direction on specific program funding levels.
The direction included full funding for civil GPS requirements at $20.7 million. View explanatory statement (PDF)
It also provided approximately $92 million for the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and $5 million for the inland portion of the Nationwide Differential GPS (NDGPS) system.
